Who Was Involved
Carla Jan Walker was seventeen, a junior at Western Hills High School in Fort Worth, Texas, when her life ended in February 1974. To the people who loved her she was simply Carla, a teenager with a boyfriend, a school dance to look forward to, and a family that would spend nearly half a century refusing to let her case fade away.
That family became the quiet engine behind everything that followed. Her brother, Jim Walker, carried the case forward for decades, pressing investigators and later lobbying lawmakers to fund the kind of science that might one day name her killer. Carla’s boyfriend, Rodney McCoy, who had been with her on the night she was taken and was himself attacked, remained close to the Walkers for the rest of his life. Jim Walker would later say that Rodney “was and still is a member of the Walker family,” a bond forged in shared grief and tested by years of suspicion that DNA evidence would eventually lift from McCoy entirely.
The man finally held responsible was Glen Samuel McCurley, a Fort Worth truck driver who had lived in the area at the time of the killing. For decades he was one of several names that drifted through the investigation without ever being pinned down. In 2021 he stood in a Tarrant County courtroom and admitted what he had long denied.
What Happened
On the night of February 16, 1974, Carla Walker attended a Valentine’s Day dance. Afterward, she and Rodney McCoy stopped at a bowling alley in Fort Worth. While the couple sat in a car in the parking lot, a man wrenched open the door, fired a shot, and beat McCoy unconscious before dragging Carla away into the dark.
Her family’s search ended in the worst way three days later. Carla’s body was found in a culvert near Lake Benbrook, not far from where she had been taken. She had been held, assaulted, and killed. Out of respect for Carla and for those who loved her, the details of what she endured are not recounted here; the established record is clear that her death was deliberate and cruel, and that is enough.
The Investigation
Fort Worth investigators in 1974 did not lack effort, only the tools that would eventually break the case. A clue surfaced early: a magazine from a .22 Ruger pistol was recovered at the bowling-alley parking lot. That detail led police to Glen McCurley, who had purchased a Ruger that used the same kind of magazine. When questioned, McCurley told detectives the gun had been stolen from his truck. He agreed to a polygraph, passed it, and was set aside as a suspect.
And so the case went cold. For decades, the physical evidence collected in 1974, including material recovered from Carla’s clothing, sat preserved in storage. Conventional DNA testing, as it matured through the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, was repeatedly tried against that evidence and repeatedly failed. The samples were too degraded, the genetic material too sparse, to yield a usable profile by traditional means. The case stayed open in name, sustained mostly by a family that would not let it close.
The turning point came in 2019 and 2020, when detectives Leah Wagner and Jeff Bennett reopened the file with fresh resolve. After the case was featured on a television program about cold-case DNA, the investigator Paul Holes connected the Fort Worth detectives with a Texas company that specialized in exactly the problem that had defeated every earlier lab: building a profile from DNA that was barely there.
The Breakthrough
That company was Othram, a forensic laboratory near Houston built around a method it calls Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing. Rather than relying on the standard short-tandem-repeat markers used by conventional crime labs, Othram applies high-throughput sequencing to recover, enrich, and read enormous numbers of genetic markers from trace, degraded, or contaminated material. The result is a far denser genetic profile, one suited to forensic genetic genealogy, where investigators compare a profile against genealogical databases to find a suspect’s relatives and then work down the family tree.
Working from the preserved evidence taken from Carla’s clothing, Othram reconstructed a profile where earlier testing had found nothing usable. The reconstructed profile pointed to a single family. According to the investigators, the genealogical work narrowed the search to a small group of brothers who shared the surname McCurley. Among them was Glen Samuel McCurley, the same man cleared by polygraph in 1974.
Detectives then confirmed the match the careful way. In July 2020 they recovered discarded items from outside McCurley’s home and tested them against the male profile from the evidence. The items matched. Investigators later obtained a direct DNA sample from McCurley himself, and in September 2020 the laboratory confirmed that his DNA matched the genetic material recovered from Carla’s clothing. The science that did not exist in 1974 had, at last, named her killer.
Where the Case Stands Today
Glen Samuel McCurley was arrested in September 2020 and indicted on a charge of capital murder that November. His trial opened in August 2021 before Judge Elizabeth Beach in Tarrant County. After two days of testimony, on August 24, 2021, McCurley waived his right to a jury trial and changed his plea from not guilty to guilty, admitting to the abduction and killing he had denied for nearly five decades. Prosecutors had announced they would not seek the death penalty. McCurley was sentenced to life in prison. He died in custody in 2023.
The case did not end at sentencing. Spurred by the Walker family’s advocacy, lawmakers introduced the Carla Walker Act, federal legislation designed to fund forensic genome sequencing and genetic genealogy for unsolved cases so that other families might one day get the answers the Walkers waited so long to receive.
Why This Case Still Matters
Carla Walker’s case is one of the clearest demonstrations of why preserved evidence and patient families matter. For forty-six years, the truth was physically present in an evidence locker, locked inside material that no available technology could read. What changed was not the evidence but the science brought to bear on it.
The case also marks a turning point in how cold cases are solved. The same family of techniques that identified the Golden State Killer was applied here to degraded 1974 evidence, and it worked. For investigators, the lesson is to preserve everything, because tools that do not exist today may speak tomorrow. For the people who loved Carla, the breakthrough offered something rarer than a conviction: the knowledge that their decades of refusing to give up were not in vain.
