Colin Pitchfork: The First DNA Conviction
The first case solved by DNA fingerprinting both exonerated an innocent man who had falsely confessed and convicted the man who killed Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth.
The Case in One Sentence

Who Was Involved
At the center of this case are two teenage girls from the villages around Narborough, Leicestershire. Lynda Mann was fifteen years old when she was killed in 1983. Dawn Ashworth was also fifteen when she was killed nearly three years later, in 1986. They were not connected to one another beyond geography and circumstance, yet their cases would become permanently linked, first by the manner of their deaths and then by the science that finally explained them.
The other central figure never set foot at either crime scene as an investigator in the conventional sense. Alec Jeffreys was a geneticist at the University of Leicester who, on the morning of 10 September 1984, looked at an X-ray film in his laboratory and realized he was seeing something no one had seen before: a pattern in human DNA as individually distinctive as a fingerprint. He had been studying inherited variation, not crime. Within a few years his discovery would be asked to do something it had never done, and the request would come from detectives working only a short drive from his lab.
Two more names belong in this account. Richard Buckland, a local young man, would become the first person in the world cleared of a crime by DNA evidence. And Colin Pitchfork, a baker living in the area, would become the first person ever convicted of murder on the strength of it.
What Happened
Lynda Mann was murdered in November 1983 in the area of Narborough, in Leicestershire. The investigation generated hundreds of leads but no charge. After many months the inquiry stalled, and the case went cold.
In the summer of 1986 the pattern repeated. On 31 July, Dawn Ashworth was reported missing, and her body was later found in a wooded area near where she had last been seen. The similarities to the earlier killing were impossible to ignore. Both victims were fifteen-year-old girls, both had been attacked in the same corner of Leicestershire, and both had been raped and strangled. Police now had reason to believe a single offender was responsible for both crimes, though proving it, and identifying him, remained beyond the reach of the tools available to them.
Out of respect for the victims and their families, this account does not dwell on the details of the attacks. What matters for the legal history is this: by 1986 investigators were facing two linked murders, a frightened community, and a forensic dead end of exactly the kind that, in earlier eras, had so often gone unsolved.
The Investigation
The investigation into Dawn Ashworth’s murder produced an early and dangerous false turn. A local young man, Richard Buckland, came under suspicion and, under questioning, confessed to her killing. Crucially, he denied any involvement in the death of Lynda Mann.
This is where the case might have ended in an ordinary miscarriage of justice. The police had a confession. What they wanted was confirmation, and ideally proof that the same man had killed both girls. Detectives turned to the University of Leicester and to Jeffreys, expecting his new technique to tie Buckland to both murders. Forensic samples from each crime scene were compared against a sample from Buckland.
The result overturned the entire theory of the case. The DNA from the two crime scenes matched each other, confirming that one man had indeed killed both girls. But that man was not Richard Buckland. The science excluded him from both murders, despite his own confession. Buckland was released, and he became the first person in the world to have his innocence established by DNA evidence, a young man cleared by the very test police had expected would condemn him.
That outcome is one half of why this case changed the law. Before any guilty party was named, DNA had already demonstrated that it could protect the innocent, including someone who had falsely confessed.
The Breakthrough
With their only suspect cleared, investigators made an audacious decision. If the genetic profile from the crime scenes belonged to a local man, they would try to find him by testing the local men. Police launched what became the first mass DNA screening of its kind, asking thousands of men across the villages around Narborough to provide blood samples voluntarily. Roughly five thousand men within the surrounding area came forward.
The screening produced no match. For a long stretch the operation appeared to be failing, and confidence in the effort wavered. The man it was designed to catch had quietly engineered his way around it.
Colin Pitchfork had no intention of submitting his own sample. Instead he persuaded a work colleague, Ian Kelly, to take the test in his place, presenting himself to the screening under another man’s identity. The deception worked, but only for a while. The truth surfaced through an ordinary conversation: someone overheard Kelly describing how he had given a sample on Pitchfork’s behalf, and that account reached the police. The tip pointed investigators directly at the one man who had taken deliberate steps to stay out of the dragnet.
When Pitchfork’s own DNA was finally tested, it matched the profile recovered from both crime scenes. In 1988 he was convicted of the murders of Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth and received two life sentences, becoming the first person in the world convicted of murder on the basis of DNA fingerprinting evidence. Jeffreys, who had watched his laboratory discovery carry the weight of a double-murder inquiry, later spoke of his relief that the technique had held.
Where the Case Stands Today
The case is solved, and Colin Pitchfork’s guilt was established in court. The legal questions that have continued long after 1988 concern not whether he committed the murders but whether he should ever be released.
Pitchfork was given a life sentence with a minimum term that has since passed, which made him eligible to be considered for parole. In 2021 the Parole Board directed his release on licence, a decision that drew significant public objection. He was released that year but was returned to prison within months after breaching the conditions of his licence. His case has come back before the Parole Board repeatedly in the years since. According to the Parole Board’s own published material, the most recent decision available refused to direct his release, concluding that it could not be satisfied his release would be safe for the protection of the public. Why This Case Still Matters
Few investigations can claim to have changed the law in two directions at once. This one did. The exoneration is the part most worth remembering. A man had confessed to a murder he did not commit, and the evidence that freed him was not a better interrogation or a sharper alibi but a laboratory test that simply could not be argued with. From that moment, DNA was understood to be as capable of dismantling a wrongful case as of building a sound one, a principle that would later underpin innocence work around the world.
The conviction, meanwhile, established that genetic evidence could carry a murder case in court, and the mass screening that flushed out Pitchfork introduced techniques, and ethical questions, that police and the public are still weighing decades later. Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth were failed by the limits of what investigators could prove in their lifetimes. What followed their deaths reshaped criminal justice itself, and that is why their case continues to be told.
