Privacy Policy
This policy explains, in plain English, what personal information Case on the Case collects, why, and the choices you have. We try to collect as little as possible.
Who operates this site
Case on the Case is an independent, non-commercial true-crime publication operated by Rob T. Case from British Columbia, Canada. It runs no advertising and takes no funds from readers. For any privacy question or request, email editor@caseonthecase.com.
What we collect
- Information you send us. If you contact us or use the Submit a Case form, you choose what to share, this typically includes your name (if you give it), your email address (if you provide one), and the content of your message. The submission form opens your own email application addressed to us; we receive whatever you send.
- Server logs and technical data. Like virtually all websites, our hosting provider automatically records standard technical information when a page loads, such as IP address, browser and device type, the referring page, and timestamps. This is used to operate and secure the site.
- Analytics. We do not currently run any third-party analytics or advertising trackers on this site. If we add analytics in the future, we will update this policy and describe what is collected.
- Embedded video. Some articles include optional "Further Viewing" videos embedded from YouTube using its privacy-enhanced (youtube-nocookie.com) mode. These do not load YouTube cookies until you choose to play a video. If you play one, Google/YouTube may collect data and set cookies or local storage under their own privacy terms.
Why we use it
- To respond to your messages.
- To review case suggestions and corrections.
- To operate, secure, maintain, and improve the website.
- To understand aggregate, non-identifying readership patterns.
Cookies
Case on the Case does not set first-party tracking or advertising cookies, and we run no analytics cookies at this time. The only cookies or local storage that may be set come from an embedded YouTube video, and only if you interact with it. You can block or clear cookies in your browser settings.
Third-party services
We rely on a small number of third-party services to run the site: our hosting provider (Kinsta), embedded video from YouTube (Google), and the email service used for our contact address. These providers process data under their own privacy policies, which we do not control. We encourage you to review their terms.
How information is shared
- We do not sell your personal information. Ever.
- We share information only with the service providers above, and only as needed to operate the site.
- We may disclose information where required by law, or where we believe in good faith it is necessary to comply with a legal obligation or to protect the safety of any person.
How long we keep it
We keep messages, submissions, and corrections only as long as reasonably needed for the purpose you contacted us, after which they are deleted or retained in a minimal, archived form. Server logs are retained for a limited period by our host for security and operational purposes.
Your rights
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information you have submitted to us, where applicable. Email editor@caseonthecase.com and we will respond within a reasonable time. We may need to confirm your identity before acting on a request.
Jurisdiction
This site is operated from British Columbia, Canada. We aim to handle personal information consistently with Canadian privacy principles, including the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). If you are outside Canada, please be aware your information is handled in Canada and by the service providers noted above.
Changes
We may update this policy as the site evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a revised date below.
